Shade Thrown: Equality? Honey, Where? ๐
Okay, werk! So, this momma bear wrote in to Slate's *Care and Feeding* because her science-obsessed 10-year-old daughter, Emmy, wants to go to science camp. Sounds cute, right? Hold your wig, hunty. Turns out, thereโs another camper, a trans girl, also named Emily, who goes by Emmy. This cis-momma is clutching her pearls, worried her Emmy will be โconfusedโ and wants the camp to force the trans girl to use a different nickname. Girl, bye. In what universe is it okay to erase a trans child's identity like that? Itโs giving very much internalized transphobia, and weโre not here for it. This isn't about confusion, it's about acceptance, henny. Let the children live and learn some science! Someone needs to teach this mom a thing or two about respecting trans kids and chosen names. This tea is *scalding*.
Honestly, this situation is a major face palm moment. This mom needs to get her priorities straight and focus on raising her daughter to be an ally, not a part of the problem. Instead of worrying about a shared nickname, maybe she should be teaching her daughter about the beauty of diversity and inclusivity. Like, hello, two Emmys in science camp? Double the brainpower, double the fabulousness! We stan a trans-inclusive science camp, period.
Aurora Sparkle (she/her), intergalactic drag queen: "Honey, this mom needs a crash course in Camp Kindness! Let the kids be kids and worry about actual problems, like climate changeโฆor what glitter to wear for the next pride parade."
Glimmer (they/them), non-binary astrophysicist: โSis, I'm getting my PhD in Astrophysics and even I can see that the real science here is learning to love and respect each other. No need for a nickname debate, just give the girls their lab coats and let them slay!โ
Statement from local LGBTQ+ leader: "This situation highlights the importance of early education about trans identities. We must create a supportive and inclusive environment for all youth, especially in spaces like summer camps," says Mx. Rainbeau (they/them), Director of the Rainbow Youth Center.
